Summerhill Farm Shop
Summerhill Farm Shop is situated in the village of Cardington, just south of Bedford. Previously a redundant Victorian stock shed, the building was converted in 2008 and the farm shop was opened in March that year. The shop was taken over in July 2011 and many changes are being planned, some of which are already in progress.
The pretty village of Cardington is best known for the famous Cardington Hangars. These two huge “sheds” were built in 1917 and 1928 to house airships and they are still standing today although they are no longer part of RAF Cardington. Cardington was also home to Samual Whitbread (1720-1796) who founded the brewery that later became Whitbread & Co Ltd.
Summerhill Farm Shop is keen to provide the very best local, regional and British food for its customers and, since July 2011, staff have been working very hard to establish closer links with newly found local producers as well as re-establishing links with many others. The aim is to source as much stock as possible from within fifty miles of the farm shop.
The new management team bring a wealth of farming, food retail and butchery experience to Summerhill and they are keen to impart their knowledge. By following the local ethos, producers and suppliers are supported and kept in business, food miles are reduced and the local economy improved which is good for everyone.
Working with local businesses
As well as customers to the shop, work has started on forging links with other local businesses. Customers at The Hare and Hounds at Old Warden are now enjoying our award winning Summerhill Traditional Pork Sausages and diners at the recently launched Grill Room at the Nags Head in St Neots can choose our beef from the menu.
The already very popular lunch menu of made-to-order filled rolls will be expanding and this service will be offered to local businesses – all with a view to promoting fabulous local and British food and making it easier for our customers to buy local.
