Bibijis!

Bibijis are coming to Summerhill Farm Shop!  This range of low-fat fresh curry sauces are made by hand to family recipes handed down through the generations.  They have a unique whole chilli system that allows you to make them to your taste – mild or wild! 

Come and try them for yourself in the farm shop between 11.00 am and 3.00 pm on Saturday 3rd March.  With eight varieties to choose from including Kashmiri, Bhuna, Jalfrezi and Vindaloo, there will be one to suit everyone.

Colourful Cupcakes!

Local producer Sam Comar will be at Summerhill Farm Shop on Saturday 4th February with a display and free tastings of her delicious cup cakes.  Sam makes not only the familiar small cup cakes but also giant ones for sharing!  Call in Saturday to try a taste and maybe order one especially for Valentine’s Day! 

There will of course be other tastings on offer in the butchery and in the deli.  See you Saturday!

We’re open for much longer than usual this week – to help you get all your Christmas shopping done!! We are then having a couple of days off to rest but will be open again on 28th December.

Free Tasting Day – This Saturday

In the farm shop this Saturday, 19th November, we will again be welcoming local and artisan producers who will be offering tastings of their products.  Sloemotion will be here with their mouth watering range of fruit gins and liqueurs – all made from hedgerow fruit gathered from their around their own farm and used to produce these delicious drinks from traditional kitchen recipes.  Mortiers Tea will be sampling their fine single estate Ceylon teas and Annie Wallis will be sampling Evelyn’s Luxury Chocolate Sauce – both back by popular demand after their last visit!  Join us in the shop from 11.00 am to 3.00 pm on Saturday to sample these truly delicious products.

Christmas Open Evening

The Farm Shop will be open late until 8.00 pm this Thursday, 10th November.  We will have our full Christmas ranges on display – great gift ideas for the “foodie” in your life and delicious food for your Christmas feasts!  We have been taking Christmas meat and deli orders for a few weeks now so order soon to avoid disappointment – full catalogues available on our home page.

Important Dates for your Diary

There is lots happening at Summerhill from now until Christmas so here are some dates for your diary.  All events at the Farm Shop are free to attend.

  • 3rd – 6th November – 18th Century Beer & Food Festival at the Bedford Swan Hotel – Richard will be giving a butchery and sausage making demo at 6.00 pm on Friday and will be at the local produce sale from 12 noon till 5.00 pm on Saturday 5th.
  • 5th November - Moggerhanger Firework Display – Sue and Danielle will be cooking and serving Summerhill sausages and burgers from 6.00 pm at the display at Moggerhanger Park.
  • 10th November – The Farm Shop will be open late until 8.00 pm previewing and promoting all our Christmas produce and taking orders for the big day!
  • 19th November – Tasting Day in the Farm Shop – local producers will be in the shop from 11.00 am till 3.00 pm offering free tastings and talking about their produce.
  • 23rd November – (NEW DATE) Cheese and Wine Tasting Evening in the Farm Shop from 6.30 pm till 8.00 pm.
  • 26th November - Sue Vonwiller from NYR Organic will be in the Farm Shop from 11.00 am till 3.00 pm demonstrating and selling the award winning products from Neal’s Yard – entirely natural skin care products and gift sets.
  • 6th December – Jamie at Home Party at the Farm Shop from 7.30 pm with a live link to Jamie at home in his kitchen at 8.00 pm.  Laurie Anne Harvey will be on hand with the Jamie at Home range of beautiful but practical homeware – ideal for Christmas presents.

Jamie at Home Party

We are delighted to welcome Laurie Harvey to Summerhill Farm Shop on Thursday 20th October.  Laurie will be hosting a Jamie at Home party where everyone will be able to enjoy drinks and nibbles and to see Jamie Oliver’s exclusive range of kitchen and diningware.  There will also be live internet feed from Jamie’s own kitchen as he throws together a mystery recipe!  The evening starts at 7.30 pm with the live feed at 8.00 pm.  There will be a raffle for Jamie Oliver products of your choice with all proceeds going to the Jamie Oliver Foundation charity which helps many people, especially young people, to gain access to and enjoy good food.  The event is open to everyone so come along on Thursday evening and enjoy some good food!

On Saturday 15th October, The Times published a four-page pull out on their Top Thirty Farm Shops in the UK – and we were there at number eleven!  We are of course delighted to have been listed and were equally delighted to welcome all the first-time customers who visited us this weekend.

Beer & Food Festival November 2011

Taste Real Food – Bedford, in conjunction with The Bedford Swan Hotel, have organised an 18th Century Beer & Food Festival to be held at the hotel from 3rd – 6th November 2011.  Enjoy over 30 of the finest local and national award winning cask ales, ciders and perries and food all sourced locally by Taste Real Food.  Summerhill Farm Shop are delighted to be supplying the British White beef for The Same as Sandwich event on Thursday 3rd November and also that Richard, our Master Butcher, will be demonstrating venison butchery and sausage making on Friday 4th November.  For more details visit the Taste Read Food website.

Bedford’s Best Traditional Sausage!

We are really delighted to have won Bedford’s inaugural sausage challenge cup!  Following a blind tasting of all entries at their anniversary party on 23rd July 2011, members of Taste Real Food Bedford voted the Summerhill Traditional Pork Sausage the best!  A good selection of butchers and farm shops from across the county entered the competition and the sausages were judged on detailed criteria including taste, texture and shrinkage as well as raw and cooked appearance.  Our sausages are traditionally made on site at Summerhill Farm Shop using fresh, local ingredients to a secret recipe of Richard Sanders, our Head Butcher

Meet Local Producers and Sample their Wares!

On Saturday 1st October, we will be hosting our first Tasting Day.  From 11.00 am to 3.00 pm, local producers will be at the shop to talk about their produce and offer tastings.  Samples will include chutneys and preserves, curry sauces, biscuits, tea, chocolate sauce, cheese, vegetable crisps and our own award winning sausages!

Still in the English vein, we stock our delicious fruit wines from the Lyme Bay Winery.  Peach, Ginger, Strawberry, Elderflower, Apple & Blackcurrant to name some of them.  Perfect with any meal, these wines will add a great twist to your dinner party!
